Crime expert: Pay raises for cops only way to reduce crime in N.O.

A local crime watchdog says the shrinking ranks of the New Orleans Police Department is leading to an increase in brazen crime in the city.

Rafael Goyeneche of the Metropolitan Crime Commission tells WWL’s Tommy Tucker, that the depleted police force is leading to bolder criminals who think their chances of getting away with their crimes are better because of it.

“You cannot hire enough officers to catch up if you are losing 140 officers a year,” said Goyeneche.

He says the manpower shortage has many officers frustrated to the point of leaving the force.

“I believe the only way to rectify it, is to offer raises to police, not just for recruitment but also for retention,” said Goyeneche.
