"Dangerously hot" weather expected across Southeast Louisiana

The National Weather Service says an Excessive Heat Warning is in effect today from 10:00am to 8:00pm.

"Dangerous heat with peak index values of 110-120F," federal forecasters warn for all of southeastern Louisiana and Coastal/Southwest Mississippi.

Jefferson Parish sent out a warning: "Dangerous heat index values of 110-120 this week. Heat related illnesses can occur quickly. Stay hydrated & limit outdoor activities."

New Orleans issued a message through NOLAREADY: "Excessive heat forecast in NOLA, with 'feels like' temps as high as 120F. Stay cool, hydrated & check on elderly. Heat relief map at ready.nola.gov

The weather service says that could lead to people getting sick.

"Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses,  particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities."

The advisory urges people to hydrate or stay inside.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances."

If you have to be outside, the NWS suggests doing it before or after the worst of the heat.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1."

WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone says we are in for several days of intense heat.

"This pattern holds for the rest of the week," he warned. "It doesn't look like we'll have clouds and a breeze to help us out."
