Homelessness in New Orleans became a top priority in 2023 as the city saw an explosion in the number of unhoused people in encampments around the city.
A solution to such hasn't been easy to come by. As residents demand more be done, local leaders are being pushed to find permanent answers.
A meeting between concerned citizens of the Treme area and local leaders regarding the encampments under the Claiborne bridge proved fruitful. The encampments do pose several health and safety risks and those that live by wanted clear action steps to address the problem.
Councilman Freddie King of District C spoke with tommy tucker this morning about the plan for the homeless encampments and when residents near the Claiborne bridge will see a clearing of the area. The council man says there is a hard deadline set.
“There has been a date set of February 9th for when the encampments under the Claiborne overpass will be decommissioned.”
King says it was the voice of the people that made a difference in getting concrete resolutions.
“It was really the residents saying we feel ignored, we want to be heard and treated like other parts of the city that made a difference.”
The councilman says they are committed to accountability when it comes to dealing with the problem.
“We will hold everyone accountable and don’t just want lip service on February 9th.”
Everyone waits with baited breath for a reasonable outcome for all.
