Gretna Police have charged a woman with murder after they say they found her dead baby in a porta potty near the Waffle House on the Westbank Expressway.
Deputy Chief Jason DiMarco says they were called to reports of a bloody woman near the scene, and she told them she had a baby in a nearby portable toilet.
"They found a porta potty, and the went in there looking for it. Sure enough, unfortunately, the horrible scene of a newborn inside the tank of the porta potty. It appeared to be lifeless."
He says the coroner determined the baby had been born alive.
DiMarco says 37-year-old Lekesha Lemelle is homeless.
She is hospitalized and under arrest for second degree murder.
He says they will book her into jail when doctors release her.
