The Democrats are referring to Republicans as being weird, which strikes WWL's Newell Normand as odd in many ways.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have branded anything other than birthright citizenship -- where you're a citizen if you're born in the United States, even if your parents aren't here legally -- as 'weird.' They've used the same term to describe abortion bans, various positions of J.D. Vance's and more.
"But the way that the President and Kamala Harris talk about these issues, they presented in a fashion to make you think that this is way out of bounds. Very strange, very unusual, unexpected. Not natural. Not natural at all. In fact, the border is not natural. When you talk about these issues with them. That's not natural at all to be worried about homeland security. Right. It's not natural to be concerned about the cost of Medicare for all.
"In fact, Kamala Harris goes so far as to say 'let me make the record clear, any person who's here, their status is of no moment. They deserve health care. So everybody would qualify. You think that's not going to serve as a lure? So that's not weird at all. Is it? How about banning offshore drilling? It's been a hallmark and a cornerstone of the economy of this country for a long time. Fossil fuel industry. As it turns out, this administration has been blistering the fossil fuel industry for the last four years. All the while, there have been pumping oil, pumping oil, pumping oil. And now, for the benefit of Kamala Harris, they are now saying, hey, we've we've produced more oil in this country than the four previous years under under Donald Trump. Isn't this funny?"
Newell had some questions of his own, like 'is it weird to be a chameleon or to change positions at the drop of a hat?'
"In fact, Kamala Harris is trying to convince people now that she's not against fracking when she has repeatedly over and over and over again. I looked at the news clips for almost two hours last evening about all the times that she said. That she was against fracking. She's also against plastic straws. And she wants to make sure that we reduce the amount of red meat that on the lunch school program. So there's a whole lot of things that she has been saying, over the years, you know, that they're trying to make everyone believe that the opposite to what they believe in is weird, because it doesn't align with their ideology."
Joe Biden published a piece in the Washington Post about reforming the Supreme Court after controversy surrounding gifts to Justice Clarence Thomas, the allegedly Trump-supporting flat at Justice Alito's house, the overturn of Roe v Wade and the decision that former President Donald Trump has immunity for things he did in office. Was his position weird?
"They lost a couple of votes and all of a sudden the courts run amuck," Newell said. "They don't talk about all the votes that were nine zero. Where the entire court was in unanimity on a lot of issues are six, three or, you know, other issues where it was to the benefit of Democrats on that six three vote. They don't talk about those at all. Because the whole linchpin, the whole future of our democracy, it's just intrinsically linked to 1 or 2, maybe three different issues in their world. That's not weird? That the whole thing comes down to just 3 or 4 decisions. You don't find that weird?"
