A suspect is recovering from bullet wounds this morning after allegedly leading Jefferson Parish deputies on a high speed chase up and down the Westbank Expressway Thursday night.

It happened about 9:45 pm on the Westbank Expressway in Marrero.
Sheriff Joe Lopinto says the suspect was breaking into cars and businesses across the Westbank when cops spotted him and gave chase.
“He actually threw it in reverse and rammed one of our vehicles, causing some injuries to one of my deputy’s hands,” Lopinto explains. “That turned into a pursuit that went up and down the westbank expressway, mainly between Ames and Barataria in that area. During that time he rammed several of our vehicles, during that period in time our officers shot at several locations.”
At one point, Sheriff Lopinto says the suspect was driving the wrong way on the road.
“The pursuit was going head on against traffic all kind of things that were happening at different locations,” said Lopinto.
The pursuit ended near the intersection of Barataria Blvd. and 4th St.
The sheriff says the suspect had multiple bullet wounds and injures from ramming cops cars. He is listed in stable condition. At least one deputy also suffered a minor injury in one of the crashes.
“It does look like he have bullet wounds but they are minor in nature,” said Lopinto. “He was walking, talking and alert while he was transported by ambulance to the hospital, so he is in stable condition.”
The driver was apprehended and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was apprehended and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Once treated and released from the hospital, he will be booked with multiple burglary and theft counts along with counts of aggravated criminal damage, resisting by flight, and aggravated battery according to Lopinto.
