If you Google Kim Mulkey’s name, one of the first results (if not the first) that pops is: Kim Mulkey outfits.
Yes, she led the LSU Women’s Basketball team to the first NCAA Championship in school history. Yes, she did it in only her second year at the helm. Yes, the Tigers broke several records in the championship game including the most points scored in one (102).
Despite all of that, the fascination with Mulkey’s fashion is something that keeps trending. The internet can be like that sometimes.
I recently spoke with two people who have no complaints about the focus on Mulkey’s clothing: Martha Gibbs Gottwald and Jaime Glas. Gottwald is the founder and creative director of Neubyrne, a fashion brand she established eight years ago. Glas is the owner of Queen of Sparkles, which got its launch two years ago. As the name suggests, the company sells sparkly clothing. Both are Baton Rouge natives, and both had their clothing line on coach Mulkey during what would turn out to be a historic run.
Glas and Gottwald got the kind of marketing many small business owners dream of. In various games leading up to the championship, Mulkey was wearing their brands as millions of people watched. To say the least, traffic to both of their websites and social media accounts have blown up since LSU won the title.
The story of how Glas and Gottwald became connected with the coach touches on very basic tenets of business. Some of them are so basic, you could say they’re cliché, listen to my conversation with the designers here.
