Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says a man being booked at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center died while in custody Thursday morning.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office says around 6:20 pm. a detainee had what the department is calling a “medical emergency”.
He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later pronounced dead the sheriff’s office’s statement said.
At this the sheriff’s office says there s no immediate indication of a possible cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The sheriff’s office did not release the name or age of the man who died. The investigation is ongoing.
