The city of New Orleans is considering changes in who writes parking tickets.
It's an idea that some council members have pushed for years. Councilmember J.P. Morrell brought it up during a July meeting during the previous administration.
"For the last four years, Councilmember Harris and Councilmember Giarrusso have both been advocating that parking enforcement needs to be with NOPD," said Morrell. "Because when you look at what parking enforcement does, and in particular, some of the dangers that people in parking enforcement face, it makes more sense for them to be associated with NOPD and run by NOPD."
Chief Administrative Officer Joe Giarrusso, back when he was on the city council, met with his predecessor about it: "I met with the CAO, just about budget issues and other things, and this specific issue came (up), and he told me there was a policy memorandum directing the Department of Public Works to put parking enforcement and towing underneath NOPD."
The New Orleans City Council Governmental Affairs Committee will discuss transfer parking and towing enforcement from the Department of Public Works to the NOPD during their meeting this afternoon at 1 p.m.
