Don't throw Dat away…Recycle Dat!

There are many things synonymous with Mardi Gras: beads, bands, floats and trash. The scene after parades first clear the route can be horrifying.

But, one local group is looking to change how we get rid of some of the litter.

Recycle Dat is an initiative that brings together many different stakeholders across the city for a cleaner carnival season.

Anna Ngyuen, Public Engagement Director for the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness shares who is involved.

“We are partnered with New Orleans and Company, GNOF, Entergy, a number of business/civic organizations, and the community.”

Ms. Ngyuen says that along the Mardi Gras route is a prime location for recycling.  This is the second year for the program and it is already on track to surpass the numbers of items recycled from last year.

“We’ve already recycled 1800 pounds of glass, 1400 pounds of aluminum, and 1200 pounds of beads.”

After a parade, so much gets left behind. And though it is a reminder of how great a time we all just had, it isn’t so friendly for the environment.

Ms. Ngyuen says this is really a community wide issue “Recycling takes a community effort, public education, and a dedicated team.”

You can bring your recyclables during the Carnival season to six different hubs along the St. Charles portion of the uptown route. Look for the green and purple flags at each station.
