Driver gets on I-10 the wrong way, kills woman in fiery crash

A woman is dead after a driver got on the Interstate in Laplace going the wrong direction.

"Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a multi-vehicle crash on I-10 west near milepost 210 in St. John the Baptist Parish," Trooper Jacob Pucheu explained in a news release. "The crash ultimately claimed the life of 21-year-old Patricia Saidu of Baton Rouge and seriously injured another."

He says the driver of a GMC Yukon entered I-10 the wrong way from US 51 in Laplace, going east in the westbound lanes.

"At the same time, a Nissan Altima was traveling westbound on I-10, near milepost 210. The GMC struck the Nissan head-on, causing both vehicles to catch fire."

Pucheu says the wring way driver suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

"Saidu suffered serious injuries and died on scene."

They are waiting for drug and alcohol tests.

The crash happened around 11:00pm Tuesday night.

State Police did not release the name of the wrong way driver.
