A man is dead and a woman critically injured after trying to cross the road Tuesday night in the St. Roch neighborhood.
"Investigators say the accident happened at Elysian Fields Avenue just before the Interstate 10 on-ramp at North Dorgenois Street at about 8:10 p.m.," according to a news release.
NOPD says the driver of a Nissan Altima was headed south on Elysian Fields.
"Two pedestrians reportedly appeared in the road as he (was) crossing the intersection at North Dorgenois with a green light."
Cops say that the driver told them he could not avoid hitting the pedestrians.
"One, an adult male, was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS personnel, the other an adult female, was taken to the hospital and was reported to be in critical condition."
Police says the driver was cooperating with investigators and was not initially charged with any crimes.
