Drought conditions settle in just as we begin dry season

Fall begins this afternoon, and it will begin dry.

"We have not had a measurable drop of rain the entire month of September," said LSU health climatologist Barry Keim.

The U.S. Drought Monitor confirms the New Orleans area has been "abnormally dry."

"We're teetering right on the edge of drought," said Keim. "The afternoon convection has kind of disappeared, and the fronts just haven't really started pushing through here."

Parts of the Northshore are already in "moderate drought."

Keim says this time of year, we transition into dryer weather. Absent anything tropical, rain in the fall in New Orleans typically comes from fronts, and so far, no cool fronts have been able to push through, so it's continued dry weather for the foreseeable future.

There are a little better rain chances this week.  There's a 60% shot at showers Thursday.
