Entergy customers in New Orleans will get some relief from a $24 a month rate hike planned for next week.
Entergy New Orleans planned to increase customers’ bills by an additional $24 a month to help pay for upgrades to the electrical and gas systems and to help meet renewable energy goals.
The rate increase was set to take effect in November, however, under a new agreement between Entergy New Orleans and the City Council will reduce that additional $24 down to $10 a month as Nola.com reports.
New Orleans council members hope a $5 million federal pandemic money will further reduce the rate increase to $5 a month.
As Nola.com reports, some members of the City Council pledged to delay the rate hike indefinitely following the massive power outages in Hurricane Ida’s aftermath, however, the Councilmember and Utility Committee chair, Helena Moreno said Wednesday that could lead to a lawsuit by Entergy.
“While I wish we could have delayed a little bit further, that really wasn’t the responsible path to prevent rate increases for our customers,” Moreno said.
