Essence fest kicks off today, and NOPD is pulling extra duty in the downtown area to keep people safe.

While the likes of Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick rock the mic inside the Superdome, NOPD Deputy Chief Hans Ganthier says they'll be working hard to keep things safe outside.

"The New Orleans Police Department is prepared to ensure that all Essence Festival attendees, visitors, and citizens have a wonderful and safe experience this weekend," Ganthier said.

This year's festival celebrates 50 years of hip-hop. In addition to Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick, there will be performances from other old-school rappers like KRS-One, EPMD, and Big Daddy Kane. Megan Thee Stallion, Missy Elliot, and Lauryn Hill also headline the fest.

"We are fully staffed for this event while maintaining the staffing needs in all eight police districts," said Ganthier. "NOPD will have increased coverage in the downtown and French Quarter area as well as the convention center, superdome, for not only this event, but for the July 4th celebrations."

Essence runs today through July 3. The annual Go Fourth on the River fireworks show is set for July 4.
