As cooler weather (finally) arrives, our odds for being on the receiving end of a hurricane are rapidly diminishing. While it is not zero, LSU Health climatologist Barry Keim says the chances are going down by the day.

"We just need to keep a watch on the tropics and hope that the back end is not busy," said Keim. "After October's over, I pretty much write the season off."

The 2024 season has proved to be deadlier than a typical year for hurricanes, with more than 300 storm deaths, many of those attributed to Hurricane Helene.

"We don't normally see this much carnage from these storms," Keim said.

Following a lull from mid-July to mid-August, the season saw a significant resurgence, now above-average in named storms, hurricanes, major hurricanes, and total hurricane days.
