Family Gras has taken root in the region as a traditional celebration BEFORE the big kick-off to Mardi Gras proper in Jefferson Parish.
Local cuisine and crafts will be on display for parade goers and there will be plenty of sought-after throws as well. Speaking to WWL’s Tommy Tucker, Jefferson Parish Councilmember Hans Liljeberg says Family Gras will be bigger and better than ever. He emphasizes that local acts like Zebra, Amanda Shaw, and Imagination Movers will be performing alongside national acts all weekend.
Liljeberg encouraged listeners to bring the kids along to the parade route with the rest of the family to enjoy all-ages fun. He also highly recommends buying VIP passes for the best experience. “The VIP section offers food and there will also be various food trucks out serving good, local Louisiana cuisine,” Liljeberg adds. That said, he says the non-VIP experience is still a fun one for all ages.
Weather is a bit of a concern, as the forecast calls for some rain. Liljeberg says the show will go on regardless (within reason). “The plan right now is to forge ahead. It’s difficult to move these things around because of band contracts and schedules. So, we’re hoping for no rain, but we plan to plow forward,” he notes. Your best bet might be to bundle up in a couple of layers before getting in on the fun in Jefferson Parish.
