The family of former Saints player Glenn Foster Jr. has retained a renowned civil rights attorney known for his work with the families of George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, and Breonna Taylor.
Foster, 31, died while in Alabama police custody earlier this week. Foster’s family claims he is bipolar and fears he had a manic episode when police spotted him driving his car 90 mph in a 45 mph zone on December 3, in Reforma, Alabama.
As Nola.com reports, Alabama police officers chased Foster and used spike strips to stop him. Foster crashed his car and officers detained him before taking him to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office jail.
After learning of his arrest, Foster’s family contacted the sheriff’s office to inform them of his mental condition. Foster’s family bailed him out of jail and the sheriff’s office made arrangements to transport Foster to a hospital in Birmingham for evaluation according to the newspaper.
However, before he could leave the jail, Foster was rebooked on allegations he beat up an inmate and stole their socks.
Foster remained in jail Monday then deputies placed him in a patrol car to transport him to the hospital a different hospital in Northport, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities have not released any details on Foster’s cause of death. Foster leaves behind a wife and four children.
