A woman is dead after a Terrebonne Parish house fire.
"A 32-year-old Houma woman died following a residential fire," Louisiana Fire Marshal Public Affairs Director Ken Pastorick released today. "The Houma Fire Department responded to the fire in the 2200 block of Effie Street in Houma around 5:25 a.m. on September 5, 2026."
He says responding crews got the woman out of the house, but could not save her.
"Firefighters rescued the victim from the home and performed lifesaving measures. Unfortunately, she died from her injuries."
He says investigators determined the fire started in the kitchen.
"The home did not have a working smoke alarm. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation."
“This is a devastating loss, and our hearts go out to this woman’s family and loved ones as they grieve,” said State Fire Marshal Chief Chad P. Sonnier. “While nothing can undo this tragedy, we hope it reminds everyone that working smoke alarms are essential in every home. They provide an early warning when a fire starts and can give occupants the precious time they need to get out safely.”
The fire marshal fund Operation Save-A-Life program.
"Residents are eligible to receive free smoke alarms along with professional installation to ensure they are working properly."
