State Auditor Mike Waguespack told the New Orleans City Council Tuesday that FEMA plans to extend the city’s December 31st deadline to use upwards of $500 million in unspent federal grant money for the completion of unfinished road work projects.

Under the new agreement, the city will have until June 30th to complete a set list of key projects.

State and federal agents are whittling down the list of which projects will fall under the grant extension, and many unstarted projects are likely to be canceled.

While Waguespack remains optimistic that the extension will go through, it’s not yet official.
