In light of recent attacks on two women in the City Park area, many who wouldn't normally think twice about walking, jogging, or running outside are now considering if they should continue to do so and how might they keep themselves safe.
Within a matter of days, two women reported similar incidents of assault while exercising outside.
NOPD is working to apprehend a suspect believed to be responsible in both crimes.
Local self defense expert and owner of Conceal Carry NOLA, Dave Newman, says there are key things people can do to defend themselves. Number one starts with awareness.
"People are into their music with earbuds and such. But, you should have a 360 degree perimeter of surveillance around yourself at all times."
Newman says staying near your car is advised and not just to escape a dangerous situation. He says there could be some legal protections staying near your own property.
"Staying near your home, business, or car, you have more rights to defend yourself than just on the street where we all have rights."
All in all, Neman says there is but one golden rule to self defense.
"Always fight back. Never let them just take you. Poke an eye, pop a nose, just don't let them take you."
