Fire burns through apartments on frigid night in New Orleans

About 20 people were left looking for a place to live after a blustery blaze Saturday night.

Crews battled flames and gusty winds along the lakefront in New Orleans East.

"At 11:39 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to 6319 Kuebel Drive," Captain Quentin "Q" Brown said in a news release.  "The initial companies that arrived were faced with a working fire located in the right rear of the building, which was heavily involved."

He says as crews set up for the attack on the fire building, the Chiefs in command realized that the fire was progressing at a "very rapid rate."

They called for more units to assist with a second alarm.

"As crews began to fight the flames and evacuate people from the building, a third alarm was sounded for additional staffing due to high wind velocity off Lake Pontchartrain, which contributed to the fire's intensity and rapid spread."

Brown says there were at least twenty people evacuated.

"The fire was placed under control at 2:40 a.m., with no reported injuries to civilians or fire personnel.  The cause of the fire is under investigation."
