The New Orleans Fire Department says flames erupted Saturday night in what they called a "stubborn" fire in New Orleans East.

"The first NOFD company arrived on the scene of 9301 Old Gentilly Rd. at 8:10 p.m.," Captain Edwin Holmes said in a news release.

They had trouble even getting to the blaze in a scrapyard.

"Personnel located several scrap vehicles and trailer homes burning approximately thirty yards from the facility’s entrance."

Holmes says they faced on challenge after another.

"Rain, dilapidated streets and very limited street lighting in this isolated area of New Orleans East delayed finding the incident scene. Once located, restricted access and inadequate water supply were primarily what prompted this incident’s escalation to a three-alarm fire."

He says they couldn't even drive fire trucks to the fire.

"Firefighters were forced to climb over scrap vehicles blocking entry to this salvage yard. At least two hydrants in the immediate vicinity were determined to be inoperable. After gaining entry, NOFD Fire Operations  NOFD water tankers were dispatched to the scene to supplement the water supply."

It took nearly 90 minutes to get all of the flames knocked down.

"Twenty-four NOFD units, supported by sixty-two Fire Operations personnel, were used to bring this incident under control at 9:38 p.m."

No one was hurt.

"There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is currently being investigated."
