The New Orleans Fire Department responded to the abandoned Oakmont Apartment complex just after one o’clock in the morning.
Upon their arrival fire fighter found both sections of the complex completely engulfed in flames.

Embers from the burning buildings drifted in the wind and started other sections of the apartment complex on fire.
Additional alarms were called in and within the hour the count went to four alarms.

Firefighters fought the dense smoke and flames as they rescued several vagrants still in the complex and unable to find their way through the smoke.
Firefighters worked on extinguishing the first two sections of apartments as they collapsed, but not before spreading to four other apartment sections.

There were no injuries in the fight against the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
