Spring break and holiday travel are ramping up, but so are gas prices and experts say drivers should be prepared to pay more no matter when they hit the road.

The average price for a gallon of regular has jumped to over $4 across the country.

According to Patrick De Haan, a fuel expert with GasBuddy, the increase is taking a toll.

“Prices have been steadily ticking up,” De Haan said. “It really won’t matter if you leave at the beginning, middle, or end of the week you’re going to see those higher prices.”

Despite the increase, a national survey shows many travelers are sticking with their plans to take a vacay, though some are making adjustments.

“People are still getting away,” De Haan said. “But they’re choosing destinations a little closer to home, and that’s a good way to offset some of those costs.”

The shift is also changing how people travel. Experts say more Americans are opting for road trips over air travel this season.

“We’re seeing a noticeable number of people skip the airport and take to the road instead,” De Haan said. “So if you’re traveling, you likely won’t be alone.”

There are still ways drivers can stretch their fuel dollars.

De Haan recommends using apps that track real-time gas prices or offer cash-back incentives. He also says driving habits and vehicle maintenance can play a key role in fuel efficiency.

“How you drive and the condition of your car can absolutely impact how much you spend on fuel,” he said.

With more cars expected on the road and prices continuing to climb, this year’s spring travel season may look a little different, but for many, the trip is still worth the cost.
