Football season means one thing in New Orleans, tailgates. But with the weather still feeling more like summer than fall, what should you serve hungry game-day fans? Chef Kevin Belton says the trick is to keep it hearty, versatile, and fun.
Belton’s top pick? Chili
“It’s hearty, it’s versatile, and it works with just about every tailgate staple,” he said. Pile it on hot dogs, pour it over fries, spoon it onto sliders, or load it up on potato skins.
And here’s the bonus, if you make a big batch, you can freeze the leftovers. When the temps finally drop, you’ve got a warm, ready-to-go meal for another game day.
For dessert, Belton suggests keeping it light and leaning into the summer heat with a make-your-own ice cream sundae station. Set out a few flavors of ice cream and a spread of toppings.
"Sprinkles and chocolate sauce to fruit and nuts and let guests build their own treat. It’s interactive, fun, and keeps everyone cool."
So whether you’re tailgating at the Dome or throwing a watch party at home, Chef Kev says you can’t go wrong with food that’s hearty, versatile, and easy to share.
