The price of a gallon of regular gas in New Orleans has dropped more than 50 cents over the past month.

AAA says they current average is $3.53 in the New Orleans area.

A month ago it was $4.03.

It follows a drop in oil prices with traders hopeful amid peace talks between the US and Iran.

The price at the pump, however, remains about 68 cents higher than a year ago.

"The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is down to $3.99. This marks nearly 4 straight weeks of declines. Crude oil prices are down as the U.S. and Iran reach a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz," AAA posted.

It is the first time the national average was below $4.00 since March.

"Sliding gas prices come as millions of Americans prepare to travel for Independence Day in record numbers starting next weekend."
