Gayle Benson: "I think of WWL as that friend you can always count on"

One of the cornerstones of WWL Radio’s 100 years in operation has been the station’s partnership with the New Orleans Saints. As the team’s flagship station and hub for the Saints Radio Network, WWL has been responsible for countless memorable moments in Black and Gold history.

New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson gave her thoughts on what WWL Radio means to the New Orleans, Louisiana, and Gulf South communities in a video posted on YouTube.

“I think of WWL as that friend you can always count on being there to tell you what you really need to hear,” Benson said.

In the clip, she speaks about how WWL is intrinsically tied to the Saints’ most successful season, its 2009 run to a Super Bowl title.

“Certainly no fans will ever forget that magical call that accompanied our NFC Championship and Super Bowl victories,” Benson said. “I can still see my husband Tom Benson holding up that trophy as he dedicated the victory to his hometown, and then ‘Benson Boogeying’ off the field that life-changing night in Miami.

“WWL was there for all of it, describing it just the way people across the Gulf South had come to expect from a true hometown radio station,” she continued.

Benson also appeared live on the Newell Normand Show to expound more on her love for WWL.

“The community has relied on WWL for sports, especially the Saints, over the years,” she said. “And they’ve been a reliable source for major weather events and hurricanes and being up to date. It’s just been the iconic station… and I think people just adore it and depend on it.”
