Newell: A Republican presidency means nothing without a House and Senate majority

Even if Republican frontrunner Donald Trump wins the presidency, how effective can he be without a Republican majority in the House and the Senate?

"The ballot is bigger than Trump. There are other people running. And if we don't win the House and we don't win the Senate, it doesn't do us much good to win the presidency," said WWL's Newell Normand.

"There won't be any gains there," he added. "And we only get four years because that's all he can serve -- he cannot serve two terms. A lot of people still don't realize and recognize that."

There's no doubt that Trump has gained the favor of Republicans this election season, but he's also cost the GOP quite a bit -- and we're not talking about his legal bills.

"I need not remind you that most recently in some of the elections of Republicans who were frontrunners in certain races who didn't happen to be Trump supporters, he attacked them. And in some cases they lost. Great. We elected a Democrat," Normand said. "How does that work to the benefit of the Republican party? It may work for Donald Trump. But then again, maybe not."

It's not about voters aligning with the Republican banner, Normand explained, because in Trump's mind, he IS the banner.

"That may work well for this election. It will set us back even further relative to the development of the party, of bringing more people under the tent, and moving forward," Normand said. "The Democrats are champing at the bit. They're licking their chops. They love what's unfolding here. If they had to choose the candidate that they had to run against, it's Donald Trump."

"It's a sad commentary when the best thing we have going for us is the Democratic party and the best thing they have going for them is the Republican party. Odd," he added.
