Louisiana's governor today threw his support behind an effort to bring the a National Hockey League team to New Orleans.

Jeff Landry posted, "It’s time Louisiana has an NHL Team. The economic impact would be substantial and having the Stanley Cup in the Big Easy would be a win for all!"

The governor's comments come after news reports that a team of potential investors from New Orleans met with NHL officials in New York.

NHL analyst Kevin Weekes reported, "In speaking to Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and other sources involved,I can confirm that there was a  recent meeting in NYC with a group expressing their interest in bringing an @NHL expansion team to New Orleans."

Louisiana has had a variety of minor league teams over the year, but never on NHL franchise.

New Orleans was home to the East Coast Hockey League team, the Brass.

They played in the Municipal Auditorium starting in 1997, before moving to the New Orleans Arena in 1999.

The Brass' run in the city ended after owner Ray Nagin was elected as the mayor of the city in 2002.
