A Gretna teen is dead after his family says he was shot and killed in the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine's Hamas regime.

According to WWL-TV and the Associated Press, Tawfiq Abdeljabbar was shot by an Israeli national while in the West Bank territory claimed by Palestine and occupied by Israel. Conflicting reports say the man who mortally wounded Abdeljabbar was either a militant or a civilian. The nonprofit group Louisiana for Palestine says that Abdeljabbar was wounded while riding in a car. Meanwhile, Israeli police told the AP that it received a report of a "firearm discharge, ostensibly involving an off-duty law enforcement officer, a soldier, and a civilian." The shooting, Israeli police said, targeted people "purportedly engaged in rock-throwing activities.

Abdeljabbar's family says he was born and raised in Gretna and held dual U. S. and Palestinian citizenship. Abdeljabbar's uncle described him as a Saints fan who loved beignets and charbroiled oysters and as a studious teen who was planning to go to the University of New Orleans in the fall to study engineering.

Abdeljabbar's uncle says his family returned to the Middle East last May in an effort to show the teen his Palestinian roots.
