Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputies jailed a Hahnville man on charges of rape and attempted murder, after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed repeatedly at a Harvey playground.
NOLA.com reports 21-year-old Matthew Zeringue was arrested hours after the incident Friday.
According to investigators, Zeringue met his victim, a Marrero resident, via the Internet and arranged a meet-up at Kings Grant playground in Harvey.
Detectives say the teen got into Zeringue's car, but when she refused to have sex with him, he raped her and then began stabbing her.
The sheriff's office says the teen managed to fight him off long enough to escape his vehicle and run for help.
In addition to attempted murder and rape, Zeringue faces charges of false imprisonment, aggravated batter, and obstruction of justice.
