Tension between the city of New Orleans and state government in Louisiana is nothing new, but does this latest feud feel a little more intense than usual?

"It's not good for either the city or the state," said political analyst Ron Faucheux, who says the city of New Orleans and state leaders have had ups and downs before.

"It surely went back to Huey Long's day, when they had machine guns hanging out the windows of the voter registration office," said Faucheux. "There's nothing new with that kind of a conflict."

Faucheux said recent shifts in political winds have left the Crescent City isolated.

"New Orleans finds itself a blue city in the middle of a red sea," he said.

And Faucheux believes this recent fight seems to be lingering from years of mismanagement in the city of New Orleans.

"We're still paying for that, and we're still paying for that image, but hopefully, it can be worked out," Faucheux said.

He says neither side wants to risk the kind of bitter partisanship that has gripped the nation's politicians in Washington, D.C.
