High chance of tropical development in Gulf

The National Hurricane Center now says there is an 80% chance that a tropical system develops in the Caribbean and moves into the Gulf of Mexico over the next several days.

"Disorganized showers and thunderstorms located over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and portions of Central America are associated with a broad area of low pressure," federal forecasters posted.

The NHC says environmental conditions appear favorable for development of this system.

"A tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form during the next few days while moving northward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico."

Models disagree about where it may go.  It could head anywhere from Louisiana to Florida.

WWL TV Meteorologist Brooke Laizer says it is difficult to forecast a system that has not formed yet, but for now Florida looks most likely.

"We will likely see a named storm Tuesday or Wednesday that moves into the Gulf Wednesday or Thursday. Land impacts will likely time out Friday into Saturday, potentially along the Florida coastline."

She says things should be better defined by Tuesday.

"At that point, timing, strength, and a potential track details will become more defined."
