A man visiting a state park in Arkansas got a sparkling surprise when he discovered a massive diamond on the grounds.
Jerry Evans made the discovery while visiting Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro with his girlfriend, initially thinking his find was a piece of glass because of its size.
Luckily, Evans decided to have it checked out by Gemological Institute of America, and that’s how he learned it was a 4.87-carat diamond.
The diamond is the third-largest found in the park known for the prevalence of the glittering gemstones found within its limits since a 9.07-carat brown diamond was discovered in 2020.
“I thought it might be a piece of glass, it was so clear. I really didn’t know,” Evans said in an Arkansas State Parks news release. “We were picking up everything thinking it was a diamond.”
An average of one-to-two diamonds are found in the park each week.
