The U.S. Marshals Service has arrested a significant number of fugitives in the New Orleans metro Area. The officials made the announcement Wednesday.
The roundup occurred under Operation North Star III earlier this summer, nabbing more than 4,400 wanted felons in 20 cities nationwide, 201 of them in the New Orleans area.
Locally, 33 were arrested for homicide, 46 for assault, 32 for sex offenses, and 15 each for robbery and weapons offenses. Thirty firearms were seized during the operation.
Enix Smith III, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Louisiana, says being chosen to take part "was an invaluable resource" for the New Orleans area.
More than a dozen local law enforcement agencies assisted in the arrest of the fugitives locally, including parish sheriffs' offices and the FBI.
