I-10 in Mississippi just east of the Louisiana state line reopened after midnight, after being shut down for hours while firefighters battled a blaze in the interstate median.
Record heat, drought, and winds combined to make the situation difficult for firefighters. Dense smoke obscuring the highway forced the closure, as well as the need to keep lanes clear for firefighting equipment.
It took ten fire crew and Mississippi forestry officials to bring the fire under control.
The fire singed 200 acres.
