After a three-week closure, Interstate 55 North has reopened to traffic.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and Louisiana State Police announced the opening just before 10:30 a.m. Monday. Traffic is now allowed to go towards Ponchatoula from Laplace.
The reopening comes three weeks to the day after a deadly 168-car pileup on the highway. That massive crash, which was the result of superfog that settled over the roadway and caused zero visibility for drivers, left seven people dead and many more injured. A line of mangled cars along with fire damage contributed to the lengthy cleanup and inspection that force officials to close the highway.
Officials repaired parts of the bridge that were damaged by the crash and fire before reopening the road.
