I-55 survivor describes being in his car as it fell from bridge
Louisiana State Police

Many lives stand changed forever after the massive car pileup on Monday that took eight lives and injured dozens more. As survivors come forward with their stories, a clearer picture of what happened is starting to take shape.

“All of a sudden, it was just a wall of wrecked cars. I hit the brakes, went to the right and with in seconds it was just water” recounts Zack Barton who survived being knocked from the highway into the water below.

Barton told WWL’s Tommy Tucker that as he and a friend were making their way to St. Francisville for a hike, he actually thought traffic would be better on I-55 then on I-10. It would prove to be a fateful decision.

“I’m just very fortunate to be here. That’s all I can think about. If my seatbelt had not come loose, I probably would’ve [died].”

Zack left the scene with only a few scrapes and requiring just ten stitches.
