New data show that 60% of adults over the age of twenty in the New Orleans metro area say they’re single. That's a full eleven points higher than the national average of 49%.

Local matchmaker and dating coach Ann Parnes says despite New Orleans’ reputation, it’s not all bad news for those looking for love.

“People think this is a difficult city to date in,” Parnes said. “But truth is, there are many intentional daters.”

The matchmaker says there are a range of reasons why so many adults in the region are going solo.

“For those in their mid-twenties, many tend to leave and return once they’re more established,” she explained. “Educated women can find it difficult to find their intellectual equal. And for some, they simply find more joy in being single.”

But for those still swiping, hoping, or wondering, Parnes offers encouragement:

“Hang in there. Make lemonade out of lemons. Dating is a numbers game.”
