At the grocery store, egg prices have finally come back to earth, but what about all the other groceries that have gone up since the pandemic? For the most part, things are still pricey, but there are bargains to be found.
"You're going to have to shop smart," said Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. Mike Strain.
Strain says some commodities, like cereal grains, are still pretty high, and so are food production costs. Even if those prices dropped now, he says you are not going to see it in stores for some time
"The price of the food that you buy today is reflected in the cost over the last 12 to 18 months," Strain explained.
"Some of the costs have come down. The price of fuel has come down, the price of fertilizer has come down," said Strain. "But by and large, all other costs are up."
He says shoppers have adjusted their buying habits, looking for things that are abundant -- and cheaper.
"Right now, if you like crawfish, now is the time, because we're on the tail end of the crawfish season and they're really, really nice and the prices have come down," Strain said. "Look at rice, look at poultry, look at ground beef."
