St. Charles Parish took a severe beating from Ida, and we’re now just six months away from the official start of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Parish President Matt Jewell told WWL’s Tommy Tucker they’ve been hard at work repairing the parish, and he anticipates most of the most important work will be completed before the next wave of systems begins forming.
“Obviously things like your water intake system that takes a little more permitting and more engineering, but we are well into our, our repair phases,” said Jewell.
While core infrastructure is set to be mostly repaired by June 1st, it’s unknown whether the River and Bayou Parishes on housing crises will be adequately addressed in time. Jewell said right now they’ve got about 260 trailers operational in the parish, but FEMA remains stubbornly slow.
“Infect I spent all day yesterday getting a resident inside of his trailer, and that trailer had been sitting on his property for one month and he had not been allowed to get into it because, of, you know, whatever, it failed an inspection,” said Jewell.
