Jefferson Parish is carving out a new place in Mardi Gras history this season, with parades scheduled on both Monday and Tuesday before Mardi Gras Da; a back-to-back early-week rollout that Carnival historian Arthur Hardy calls historic.

Hardy says the move stands out not just for the timing, but for the spectacle the krewes promise to bring.

“The fact that Jefferson Parish has parades rolling both Monday and Tuesday is historic in itself,” Hardy said. “And these are not small productions. The Krewe of Music and the Krewe of Symphony are really spectacular visually.”

Traditionally, early-week parade dates have struggled to pull large crowds compared to the prime weekend slots. But Hardy says Mardi Gras has been steadily expanding its footprint and this may be the right moment to try something new.

“Historically it’s been tough to get crowds out at the beginning of the week,” he said. “But Mardi Gras continues to grow, and this could be the perfect time to make that move.”

Hardy says the decision by parish officials to grant permits shows confidence in both the krewes and the potential audience.

“The krewes and officials must see the potential,” he said. “It’s a good sign that the permits were granted and the opportunity is there.”

If the turnout matches the ambition, Hardy says the Monday and Tuesday before Mardi Gras could soon become a recognized and anticipated part of Carnival tradition.

“So now,” he said, “those days may become part of Mardi Gras lore.”
