As we move into the 4th of July weekend, police agencies are ramping up efforts to make sure drivers and boaters are sober.

"In an effort to prevent alcohol-related injuries and fatalities, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office will be participating in National 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' enforcement campaign," JPSO Sergeant Brandon Veal warned in a news release.

He says that JPSO deputies will have increased patrols focused on identifying and arresting impaired drivers.

"The campaign urges people to plan ahead and never drive after consuming alcohol, or other drugs."

Cops on the Northshore are also taking part.

"The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is joining other local law enforcement agencies in a coordinated effort to reduce impaired driving fatalities this week as our nation celebrates Independence Day," Lt. Suzanne Carboni wrote.

She says that effort also extends to the water.

"The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division will also be out in force proactively patrolling our waterways for what is expected to be a busy weekend on St. Tammany waterways."

Police in New Orleans are also involved.

"The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is reminding residents and visitors to make safety a priority this Independence Day holiday by driving sober," according to a news release.

It starts today.

"The NOPD will join the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and law enforcement agencies across the country in a high-visibility enforcement effort from July 2 through July 6 aimed at deterring impaired driving and preventing needless tragedies on our roadways."

Other police departments, sheriff's offices and additional agencies are also taking part.
