An inmate who had been in the Jefferson Parish Jail has died, and deputies are now investigating his death.
The incident happened on Monday.
According to Sheriff Joe Lopinto, the inmate charged at deputies when they tried to move him to the jail's infirmary after that inmate had exhibited "erratic behavior on several occasions."
Lopinto says the inmate took a stun gun from a deputy and fired it but hit no one. Lopinto adds that the inmate fought with deputies while they tried to handcuff him. The inmate, Lopinto says, became unresponsive after deputies put cuffs on him.
Authorities took the inmate to a hospital, where he died on Friday.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner is conducting an autopsy, while the sheriff's office is conducting a use-of-force investigation.
