The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says it is investigating an in-custody death.
"Yesterday, an adult male inmate was transported from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center to a local hospital after experiencing a medical emergency," Sgt. Brandon Veal said Thursday.
The inmate was pronounced dead at the hospital around 10:15 Thursday morning.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of the inmate's death.
