Jefferson Parish today kicks off the celebration of its 200th anniversary.
The parish is kicking off its celebration of its bicentennial just in time for Mardi Gras.
"It's incredible. On February 11th, Jefferson Parish will celebrate our 200th birthday," said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng.
An act of the Louisiana Legislature on February 11, 1825, established Jefferson Parish, named after Thomas Jefferson, the nation's third president.
"We're going to have, you know, kind of a bicentennial kickoff. 'Kickoff to Carnival,' we're calling it," Sheng told WWL's Tommy Tucker, "at Lakeside Mall from five to seven at night."
She says the parish has other bicentennial events to come throughout the year. Click here for more info.
