A JPSO Deputy was one of three people injured during a tornado strike on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish Wednesday afternoon.
JPSO also saw a building housing a firing range and other needed resources was heavily damaged when the roof was torn from the structure and partial collapse occurred.
More than 19,000 Entergy customers are without power and they are cautioning people to avoid downed powerlines.
Meanwhile, later in the evening Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng declared a state of emergency for Jefferson Parish.
Sheng says anyone who needs shelter can go the Terrytown Playground for aid
West Jefferson High School and Marrero Middle School are closed Thursday due to damage. Sheng said more school closures could be announced due to power outages.
Sheng asked the public not to go sight seeing with the area so heavily damaged. Deputies were dispatched to affected areas to turn sightseers away.
