Jefferson Parish’s economy is rebounding amid the pandemic.
According to Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng the parish sales tax revenue collected in October has caught up to pre-pandemic tax revenue this same time last year. Sheng says this means the sales tax collected this year is the same as last year.
“It shows economically we are very resilient in Jefferson Parish,” said Sheng. “Tourism is an industry that was just beaten down during covid, nobody traveling – so it shows we are not reliant on that, I think the retail in Jefferson Parish is strong people are still shopping.”
Sheng says another reason the parish is doing better is that the CARES ACT covered the parish’s COVID expenditures. This means the parish did not have to claw their way out of that hole, which she says put the parish in a better position to rebound economically.
It means that the sales tax we collected now is the same this time this year as it was last ear and shows we are very resilient in Jefferson Parish,” said Sheng.
