Juveniles driving car thefts across region

Two 16-year-olds are facing of eight charges related to a spree of car break-ins and car thefts.

The break-ins occurred on January 8th.


NOPD says the youths were driving a stolen Kia to get around to their targets.

Meanwhile NOPD says over 4400 cars were reported stolen during 2022 and already, three weeks into 2023 there have been 404 cars stolen, averaging 23 cars a day.

NOPD auto theft investigators say most of the car thefts are being done by juveniles and even middle schoolers as young as 12.

Car break ins and thefts in River Ridge and Elmwood were traced back to perpetrators who live and work out of Orleans Parish.

Former Police Chief Ronal Serpas says the crimes are being committed by brazen youths who have come to believe they will not be held responsible for their crimes.
